    Healthy Buildings 2021 Conference – America

    In the tradition of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ) HEALTHY BUILDINGS (HB) Conferences dating back to 1988, we are proud to announce the 16th conference in this series. The Conference is being held in a live, virtual format on January 18–20, 2021, hosted by the Cleaning Industry Research Institute (CIRI). ISIAQ program chairs, Dr. Kerry Kinney and Dr. Richard Shaughnessy, have selected the theme “Bridging the Gap Between Research and Practice – In the Age of COVID-19 and Beyond.” This groundbreaking conference will connect the scientific research of ISIAQ’s core membership with the experience of practitioners and technicians in the fields of IAQ pertaining to ventilation, buildings, building maintenance, indoor chemistry, cleaning, disaster restoration, biological contamination, comfort, and health implications of indoor exposures. Special emphasis will be placed on COVID-19 and implications on the indoor environment for this and future generations.

    Meet the Conference President

    Dr. Kerry Kinney is the Gilven Centennial Professor in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin as well as a Professor in the Department of Population Health at the Dell Medical School. Her cross-disciplinary research in environmental engineering centers on the investigation of human exposure to contaminants in the built environment.  Her research team investigates microbial communities, pathogens, allergens and pollutants present in a range of settings including homes, schools, and commercial buildings.  Her current research focuses on microbiome and pathogen studies, bioaerosols, contaminant exposure pathways as well identifying the relationships between indoor exposures and the physical and mental health of building occupants.

    Meet the Conference Vice President

    Richard J. Shaughnessy, has served as Director of the University of Tulsa’s Indoor Air Quality Research Program (TUIAP) in the Chemical Engineering Department since 1987. His studies have focused on particulate research, air cleaner evaluation, indoor chemistry, school studies, asthma/housing research, and resolution and remediation of bioaerosol-related problems. He is experienced in field research in homes and schools, and associated measurements/tools related to characterization of IAQ and moisture. He is currently furthering research studying associations between IAQ parameters in classrooms and student health/performance, and is actively working toward defining a basis for “clean” in schools which applies to both performance and health of students. In addition, he currently is overseeing a HUD grant to define what constitutes “normal” background fungal ecology in homes. He was a primary member of the ACGIH Bioaerosols Committee and contributing author to the 1999 ACGIH book on Bioaerosols: Assessment and Control, and contributing author and section editor to the AIHA document on Recognition, Evaluation, and Control of Indoor Mold.  Dr. Shaughnessy was a contributor and member of technical review work group for the 2014 Healthy Housing Standard (American Public Health Association 2014). Through 2009 – 2012, he also served as President of The International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ), and continues to work with the Society to translate science into practice.
